United Malt says China barley bans felt around the world – The Australian Financial Review
China’s heavy buying of US corn after it imposed trade sanctions on Australian farmers is pushing up barley prices as far away as Canada.
Australia exported about 6.5 million tonnes of barley to China as recently as in 2017 but Beijing effectively shut down the multibillion-dollar trade in May by imposing import tariffs of more than 80 per cent.
Mr Palmquist said Australia was harvesting its best barley crop since 2017. Prices have come down sharply with the big crop and United Malt expects to avoid costs it incurred in the past two years when it was forced to shift supplies from west to east.
