Last week provided a proud moment for one of our retired officers, Barry Walker, a true legend and pioneer of the Australian Border Force Detector Dog Program. Barry was awarded the Commissioner’s Excellence
Award for his outstanding service and positive contribution to customs and border security over a long and distinguished career. In 1969, Barry was a Preventive Officer for the Australian Customs Department. Inspired by a Time magazine article about US military detector dogs, Barry submitted a proposal for Australia’s first detector dog unit.
