Authorities issued the public health alert on Wednesday evening despite no new infections for a fourth consecutive day.
More than 18,500 northwestern Sydney residents have been told to get tested for COVID-19.
NSW Health issued the public health alert on Wednesday evening following the discovery of virus fragments at two local sewage pumping stations.
The suburbs impacted include North Kellyville, Rouse Hill, Box Hill, The Ponds, Kellyville Ridge, Parklea, Quakers Hill and Acacia Gardens.
The virus fragments were detected through the states ongoing sewage surveillance program.
