After 20 Years in Orbit, ISS Is Approaching Retirement. Here’s What Might Replace It – ScienceAlert
The $150 billion orbiting laboratory won’t live forever. Private companies are rushing to fill the void with commercial space habitats.
On Monday, the world celebrated 20 years of continuous human presence in space. Astronauts and cosmonauts have lived aboard the International Space Station without a break since November 2, 2000.
Over those 7,300 days, the $150 billion orbiting laboratory has hosted 241 people from 19 countries, and more than 3,000 scientific experiments have been conducted there.
The crew of the International Space Station usually consists of six people at most.
