‘You can’t be what you can’t see’: Lack of women in Tasmania’s top legal positions
There are six judges, three acting judges and one associate judge in Tasmania’s Supreme Court.
Key points:
- There is only one woman judge in Tasmania’s Supreme Court, despite more women graduating from law in the state than men
- The president of the Tasmanian Women Lawyers says there needs to be cultural change within the legal industry that supports and encourages women
- Attorney-General Elise Archer says she’s encouraging women to apply to be the state’s seventh Supreme Court judge

The statistics are a little better when it comes to the state’s Magistrates Courts.
