‘World’s loneliest elephant’ Kaavan airlifted to Cambodia following Cher campaign
Animal experts have sent off Kaavan, dubbed the “world’s loneliest elephant”, from Pakistan to his new home at a sanctuary in north-western Cambodia.
Key points:
- Kaavan has been at Islamabad zoo for 35 years and on his own since 2012 after his partner Saheli died
- Cher has campaigned for several years to get Kaavan moved to a better home and is making a documentary about the process
- Having been diagnosed as dangerously overweight, veterinarians have recently helped Kaavan lose 450 kilograms
After languishing in a zoo in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad for years and a prolonged campaign by American singer Cher, Kaavan is being airlifted on a Russian cargo plane towards the much-needed company of other elephants.
