We already knew that the Kent variant of the coronavirus spread faster than earlier versions. Now comes the unwelcome news that certain strands of its family tree have picked up a mutation that appears to lessen the effectiveness of vaccines.
The mutation, known as E484K, is the genetic change that has caused the most concern in the so-called South African and Brazilian virus strains.
