As far as policy backflips go, the decision to upgrade the NBN was a reverse 2½ somersault performed in the sneer position. But will people be left better or worse off?
Such an insistence fails to take into account the fact that techniques such as nano-trenching where fibre optic cables are rolled out in shallow, quick-to-cut slots in roads and footpaths have dramatically altered the speed and economics of fibre rollouts since the original plans for the NBN 1.0 were drawn up in 2009, meaning it is impossible to say just how many households would now have the original, fibre version of NBN by now.
