Why was Prince Philip never king?

Prince Philip was the longest-serving consort in British history.
He married the then-princess Elizabeth in 1947 and was by her side for her coronation in 1952, when he officially became prince consort.
But despite being married to the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh was never king.
