Why was Myanmar’s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi charged over walkie-talkies?
After being detained during Monday’s military coup in Myanmar, the South-East Asian nation’s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi has now been charged with some fairly unusual offences.
Police accused Ms Suu Kyi of possessing illegally imported communications equipment — specifically, walkie-talkies.
The radio devices were found during a search of her home in the capital Naypyidaw. Ms Suu Kyi has been charged with importing them illegally, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison.
Myanmar’s military said Ms Suu Kyi, who has not been seen since being detained along with other civilian politicians during the coup, would remain detained until February 15 for investigations.
