Football Federation Australia knew very early on that it was not going to get access to large grounds in Melbourne, Perth, and Adelaide because of the AFL.
The AFL owns Marvel Stadium and has a long-term deal with the MCG, the only two venues in the Victorian capital that can house crowds of more than 50,000, a FIFA requirement for the final matches.
