The international trade in wildlife is no joking
Our ‘investi-gators’ snapped up the opportunity to seize a Saint Laurent alligator handbag valued at more than $26,000. Products derived from alligator are only allowed into Australia with the appropriate CITES permit.
The maximum penalty for wildlife trade offences under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 is 10 years’ imprisonment and $222,000 for individuals ($1,110,000 for corporations).
On this occasion though, authorities took no further action…
