WA election: Population boom in Darling Range puts transport issues front of mind

From a country town to a booming suburban hub, one of the biggest battles on Western Australia’s election day is set to play out in Byford — one of the fastest-growing areas in Australia.
Key points:
- Traditionally a conservative seat, Darling Range changed hands in 2017
- The WA Liberals won it back after a by-election the following year
- A population boom has put transport issues high on voters’ priority lists
About 50 kilometres south-east of Perth, in the seat of Darling Range, the town of Byford has tripled its population in the past decade.
Cafe owner John Russell moved to the area seven years ago, opening his business in 2019.
He said in that time, things had snowballed.
