Voters in Tasmania’s north-west seat of Braddon are a breed of their own

Once you reach Latrobe, the highway along Tasmania’s north-west coast is particularly smooth-sailing.

The double-lane, gently winding road beside the glittering Bass Strait coastline to Burnie is one of the best in the state, though it’s often taken for granted by locals.

It’s the first clear sign you’re in marginal seat territory — welcome to Braddon.

Historically referred to as Tasmania’s bible belt, the electorate skews industrial, agricultural and older, with 2016 census data showing more than 27 per cent of the population are aged over 60, compared to around 22 per cent in the Hobart seat of Clark.
