Victorian clubs prepare to be away for at least six more weeks – The Age
Geelong star Patrick Dangerfield said it seems inevitable that Victorian clubs will be asked to stay away for longer than they initially agreed as the COVID-19 situation in Victoria deteriorates.
Dangerfield said the lockdown in Melbourne made it particularly tough for players to leave their families, especially those with children, in circumstances where the situation was changing so rapidly.
However the players accepted their responsibility to keep the game going and Dangerfield said no one had any complaints about the facilities provided to clubs or the support the AFL was giving players.
“You can’t afford to look any further than five metres in front of you,” Dangerfield said.
Geelong coach Chris Scott said the Cats were trying to focus on the short-term challenge that playing Collingwood on Thursday night represented, while being cognisant that the long-term outlook changed regularly.
He said the AFL had put the Cats, who are staying at Crown in Perth, in “as good environment as possible to perform at a decent level” and although they were confined to their hotel other than when playing or training there was no cause for complaint.
“My approach has been to prepare as much as you can for the possibilities of the longer term but then park them and focus on the short term,” Scott said.
