The Vatican has announced that priests cannot bless same-sex unions and that such blessings are not valid.

It was a ruling that greatly disappointed gay Catholics who had hoped their Church was becoming more welcoming under Pope Francis.

The Vatican’s orthodoxy office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), issued a formal response on Monday to a question about whether Catholic clergy had the authority to bless gay unions.
