UN special envoy tells Security Council to act to avoid ‘bloodbath’ in Myanmar
The United Nations special envoy on Myanmar told a session of the UN Security Council that “a bloodbath is imminent” because of the military’s intensified crackdown on anti-coup protesters.

- The meeting was called by Britain in response to the worsening violence
- More than 140 civilians died in protests on Saturday, the deadliest day so far
Christine Schraner Burgener told a closed session of the 15-member council the military that seized power in Myanmar on February 1 was not capable of managing the country, and warned the situation on the ground would only worsen.
