Twitter locks US President Donald Trump’s account for ‘severe violations’ of civic integrity policy

Twitter has for the first time locked the account of US President Donald Trump and threatened to permanently suspend him from the platform, in the wake of “unprecedented” and “violent” protests in the US Capitol.
Key points:
- Twitter said the decision had been made in response to the “ongoing violent situation” in Washington, DC
- A video message released by Mr Trump has also been removed from YouTube and Facebook
- Social media companies have been under pressure to police misinformation on their platforms around the election
