It was 1996 and Waller was then an unknown 23-year-old from New Zealand and was asked to lead a horse for the nation’s dominant big-race trainer, Lee Freedman.
“I can’t remember who asked me but I can certainly tell you I was very proud to be leading a horse around for the Freedmans even though it wasn’t in the Golden Slipper,” Waller said.
