Tourism operators fear loss of Queensland tourists at Easter as Mark McGowan defends WA hard border

As soon as Western Australia re-imposed a COVID-19 hard border with Queensland, the phones started ringing off the hook at the Kununurra Country Club Resort.
Key points:
- East Kimberley businesses expect to lose thousands in revenue
- Mark McGowan says not closing the border could be “catastrophic”
- He has not ruled out mandatory vaccination for frontline WA workers
“We’ve probably had 20 room nights cancelled, and then a whole bunch of reshuffling to do with people trying to reorganise their holiday and work travel plans,” resort manager Fiona Kuiper said.
It was a “here we go again” moment, she recalls.
“It’s a bit of a sick to the stomach and where is this going to go? Can we do it again?”
