Scientists believe even tougher coronavirus restrictions will soon be needed to combat the spread of the new variant.
According to the latest research, the mutated Covid-19 is “hugely” more transmissible than the virus’ previous version.
A study by Imperial College suggests the second lockdown in November failed to halt transmission of the variant. During that period transmission actually tripled.
It comes as the latest figures for Devon and Cornwall show an increase in the spread of the virus.
