Think cyclones are just for Nth Qld? Think again. While not as common, SEQ is not immune.
This vintage shot from Lost Brisbane’s Facebook shows monster seas battering the old Hornibrook Bridge to the Redcliffe Pensinsula when Cyclone Dora hit just north of Brisbane in 1971.
The East Coast Cyclone in 1898 tracked very close to the coast as far as NSW, killing 30 people. In 1954, the Great Gold Coast Cyclone made landfall at Coolangatta. Wanda crossed near Maryborough, triggering the devastating 1974 floods, and while Nancy in 1990 didn’t hit land, it battered the SEQ coast. And 2013’s massive flooding came off the back of ex-Cyclone Oswald which travelled south inland before heading back… More
