‘They were no chance of scoring’: Richmond coach Damien Hardwick swipes at Sydney after ‘horrendous’, ‘farcical’ game – Fox Sports
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has taken a veiled swipe at Sydney and the defensive mindset of some AFL clubs, saying Sunday’s game at the Gabba was “horrendous”.

A combination of two sides heavily impacted by injury, wet conditions and defensive setups saw the Tigers and Swans combine to kick just seven goals for the game.
The combined score of 60 was the lowest for an AFL match since late 1996 – though of course the shorter quarters impacted that as well.

Round 6
Hardwick described the Tigers inability to convert their 53 inside 50s onto the scoreboard as farcical.
Richmond press conference

It was a horrendous game of football, theres no doubt about that, Hardwick said post-game.
It was hard to watch, it was hard to play. It was just incredibly frustrating and unfortunately its sometimes how games pan out.
Youve got a lot of players in one (defensive) 50 – they cant get out, and we cant score. We had 50-odd inside 50s for four or five goals, which is farcical in nature, really. Horrible game of football.
The dual premiership coach said the Swans were no chance of scoring and half-jokingly said the fourth quarter was an improvement because they actually tried to win the game.
Richmond snatch scrappy win

If games are like this tonight, absolutely (Im concerned about the standard of play), he said.
Theres not much I can do. Were attacking, and weve got 75,000 people in our forward 50, so its pretty hard.
Weve got to figure out how to negate it, its happened a couple of times this year. Its become a tactic in the AFL, the foldback mentality is really keeping sides in games at the moment, its creating probably the game that we got tonight. Not pretty.
The top disposal-getters for the game were defenders, with Callum Mills notching 29 disposals including a remarkable 15 intercepts as the Swans repelled attack after attack.

The ball was down there (our forward 50) for the vast majority of the game, Hardwick said.
The player thats running around (Mills), hes a good player.
I didnt think we were much chance of scoring but they were no chance of scoring. I think they got two goals from 50-metre penalties but outside of that they kicked one goal for the game.
