Viewers had plenty of reasons to switch off before the end of the ceremony, which cut all its usual fanfare and let winners talk for as long as they wanted.
It will go down in history as the worst Oscar ending since La La Land I mean Moonlight won the Academy Award for best film.
Everyone thought the very long (and dull) night would finish with a posthumous nod to Chadwick Boseman, whose death from colon cancer in August 2020 came as a great shock to the world.
Instead the Oscar for Best Actor was given to Anthony Hopkins, who did not accept the award in-person, for his dramatic performance as man with dementia in The Father.
