Do rowdy neighbours deprive you of peace and quiet on sultry summer evenings? If the answer is yes, perhaps you need a noise-cancelling window.
Researchers in Singapore have created a device that can reduce the intensity of sound that passes through an open window while still allowing a breeze to flutter in.
It can cut the perceived volume of traffic noise by half, they write in a study published yesterday in the journal Scientific Reports. The gadget uses the same principles found in noise-cancelling headphones.
It consists of 24 loudspeakers, each 4.5cm in diameter, which are fixed in a grid pattern to bars that can be attached to the inside of a window.
