The SLC25 family is almost exclusively responsible for the transport of metabolites, including amino acids, fatty acids, cofactors, inorganic ions, and nucleotides across the inner mitochondrial membrane. The substrate of around one third of SLC25 carriers has not been identified, and selected metabolites are known to be transported by more than one carrier (27).
