Edward Lodewijk Van Halen was born on January 26, 1955, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, to a Dutch father and an Indonesian mother. While starting out on the piano, Van Halen switched to the drums before leaving the kit behind for his older brother Alex to pick up while he himself turned to the guitar.
