The Ever Given container ship is being held in the Suez Canal as authorities argue over compensation

The ship that blocked the Suez Canal for almost a week in March has been held in the waterway as canal authorities pursue a $US916 million ($1.2 billion) compensation claim against the ship’s Japanese owner.

- Last week the head of the canal authority said the Ever Given would not leave before investigations were finished and compensation paid
- One of the Ever Given’s insurers says it recently made a “carefully considered and generous offer” that was rejected
