The ability to speak a language developed 30 to 40 million years ago, scientists believe. It is believed that with the arrival of the anatomically modern Homo sapiens about 200,000 years ago, building blocks of language took shape.
However, researchers say the ability to understand relationships between words in a sentence an important foundation for language processing may have come from the last common ancestor of apes, apes, and humans.
