Prior to his coronation as King Rama X in 2019, the then crown prince developed a reputation for hedonism as he travelled across the globe — a stark contrast to his nationally-beloved father who had a public reputation for being frugal despite building up vast reserves of royal wealth.
But the reality of the Thai monarchy’s wealth has shot to national attention in recent weeks, with protesters defying strict lese majeste laws to argue for reforms to the monarchy, including more oversight over its finances.
