A south Sydney council has rejected the state government’s ultimatum to hand over a shopping centre carpark or see local residents’ homes demolished.

At a meeting on Monday, the Sutherland Shire Council voted unanimously to knock back Transport for NSW’s (TfNSW) demand that a council owned carpark in Jannali be relinquished so TfNSW can build a new commuter carpark on the land.

Last Wednesday, Transport NSW told residents it would forcibly remove families from nine homes to make way for the new four-storey carpark if council didn’t make the shopping centre…
