Sunshine Coast Police warn of QPS phone number scam

Local police are warning residents about a scam using a QPS phone number to legitimise a government or Australian Taxation Office (ATO) impersonation scam.
Nambour Police have received reports that their phone number has appeared as the caller in a practice known as caller ID spoofing where the caller inappropriately manipulates the telephone network to indicate the incoming call is from a different number.
In this case, the phone call appears to be coming from a QPS number and the caller impersonates a government department.
They advise the victim that they have an outstanding fine or fee with them (for example, the ATO).
