The Sydney Morning Herald says Smiths agent Stan Martin has approached the Victorian club with the radical proposal, that is thought to be the first of its kind in rugby league.
Smith is contracted to Melbourne until the end of 2022 but could pay the Storm as much as $200,000 to get a release at the end of this season.
