Stewards open inquiry into Caulfield speed duel – Racenet
Stewards have opened an inquiry into the rides of two apprentices that engaged in a speed battle in the last race at Saturday’s Caulfield meeting.

Stewards have opened an inquiry into the rides of two apprentices that engaged in a speed battle in the last race at Saturday’s Caulfield meeting.
Lachlan King and Teo Nugent were called in to explain their rides on Surreal Image and France’s Boy in the Neds Toolbox Handicap.
They set a fast pace while battling for the lead in the first half of the race before both horses duly weakened in the straight finishing sixth and eighth, respectively.
Stewards took evidence from the apprentices before questioning the trainers of the horses before adjourning the inquiry until a date to be fixed.
A vet’s examination revealed France’s Boy made a slow recovery from the race while Surreal Image pulled up without an issue.
Meanwhile, jockey Billy Egan was suspended for 12 meetings for his winning ride on Efflorescence in the Neds Price Boost Multi Handicap (1400m).
Egan was found guilty of careless riding after allowing his mount to shift in at the 1000m, causing interference to Narvaez.
Stewards assessed Egan’s penalty to be in the mid-range of severity.
Egan’s penalty will start at midnight next Saturday and end on July 31.
