Amazon Prime’s wildly successful superhero series The Boys is a pulpy provocation of unexpected breadth.

Lawyers and publicists cover up the superheroes’ many crimes, including the horrific death of a loved one that introduces traumatised suburban clerk Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid) to the group of “supe”-hating vigilantes who give the show its title. Led by former CIA agent Billy Butcher (Starr’s fellow Kiwi Karl Urban), the ragtag cell tries to expose Vought and stop the superheroes without suffering one of the numerous gory deaths that punctuate the plot.
