SpaceX’s Starship prototype explodes on landing in Texas after ‘successful’ test launch
SpaceX’s Starship prototype has exploded while attempting to land during an otherwise successful test launch from the company’s rocket facility in the US state of Texas.
Key points:
- The self-guided rocket blew up as it touched down on a landing pad following a controlled descent
- It is unclear if it reached the intended altitude of 12.5 kilometres
- Elon Musk hailed the rocket’s ascent phase a success
The Starship rocket destroyed in the accident was a 16-storey-tall prototype for the heavy-lift launch vehicle being developed by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s private space company to carry humans and 100 tons (90.7 tonnes) of cargo on future missions to the Moon and Mars.
