Southern Queensland’s ‘demoralising’ green drought drags on as two thirds of state still drought-declared

Recent rainfall has transformed the landscape across parts of Queensland, but in the countryside looks can be deceiving.

A sea of green on the surface, regions in the south remain in the grip of a desperate drought, with some towns still trucking in water a year after running dry.

It is a green drought.

“I look outside the window and it is bright green,” Cloyna farmer Claire Kapernick said.

“It’s been a wonderful growing season for grass, the cattle are extremely happy.

“But we’ve had little to no runoff into dams and that’s our biggest concern going forward.”
