Solomon Islands oil spill report leaked to ABC reveals economic losses of up to $50 million
Documents leaked to the ABC have estimated the economic losses caused by an oil spill near a world heritage-listed area of Solomon Islands last year could be as high as $50 million.
Key points:
- The spill caused the direct loss of more than 10,000 square metres of reef
- The report was handed to the Government more than a year ago but its contents were not made public
- If no efforts are made to rehabilitate the ground site, the recovery could take up to 130 years
