Munster who won two premierships with Smith told NRL 360 he found out the champion hooker was hanging up the boots probably 15 minutes before it became public on Wednesday.
Smith who was in Melbourne for the unveiling of his statue at AAMI Park had just presented new captain Jesse Bromwich with his jersey before he shared the news to his old club.
