Six civilians are dead as Kyrgyz and Tajik security forces clash at border in water dispute
At least six civilians are dead and dozens wounded after security forces from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan exchanged fire across the border over a water reservoir.
Key points:
- The two countries agreed to a ceasefire, but fighting soon broke out again
- More than 800 Kyrgyz residents were evacuated from several villages
- A large part of the Tajik-Kyrgyz border has remained unmarked
Residents also hurled rocks at each other in the clash over the resource.
The frontier, dating to the Soviet era, is poorly demarcated and minor border disputes are frequent.
The latest quarrel quickly escalated as border guards on both sides joined the fighting on Thursday local time.
After hours of talks, the two countries agreed to a ceasefire and troops pulled back.
