Sinkhole in Naples, Italy consume cars in hospital parking lot

Firefighters in the Italian city of Naples have been called to the scene of a giant sinkhole which swallowed cars, road signs and trees.

The 20-metre-deep, 2,000-square-metre sinkhole opened up at a car park in the Ospedale del Mare Hospital around 7:00am local time on Friday morning, officials said.

Italian urban search and rescue workers with sniffer dogs were dispatched to make sure nobody had been trapped in the hole said no one was injured.

The sinkhole also forced the temporary closure of a nearby residence for recovering COVID-19 patients due to the electricity being cut.

The residence will reopen within days after electricity and water services are restore.
