Tortured recovery for Raiders’ spiritual leader

The Canberra Raiders are heading into this weekend’s clash against the Melbourne Storm, with some holes down the middle.
John Bateman, Corey Horsburgh and Sia Soliola all have indefinite return dates as they recover from surgery and Emre Guler is out until at least round 17 with an ankle injury.
Soliola had surgery today, after fracturing his face on the weekend. He hasn’t been able to eat solid food, instead blending food to drink through a straw.

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad said he visited the playing group yesterday before he went under the knife.
“He’s in good spirits, he’s really positive about everything and that helps as well,” Nicoll-Klokstad said.
“He’s our leader, he’s always at the forefront of everything. It’s a really good opportunity for the other middles to step up, especially for the young kids.
“Kai O’Donnell gets a shot this weekend and there’s a few other boys knocking on the door as well so it’s exciting got them.”
It’s going to be a tough task for the Raiders, who are taking on a Melbourne outfit looking to break Canberra’s three-game winning streak against them.
“We’re building, we’ve got new combinations still but I think we’re really starting to nail that stuff,” Nicoll-Klokstad said.
“I’ve said to a few of the boys behind the scenes, man once we click we’re going to be hard to play against.”
