Should ‘ring vaccination’ begin immediately to bring northern beaches COVID-19 outbreak under control?
Now is the time to roll out a coronavirus vaccine, to smother the northern beaches outbreak using a strategy known as “ring vaccination,” according to some leading experts.

- Ring vaccination would involve vaccinating COVID-19 cases and their close contacts
- Some experts said this should begin immediately to tackle Sydney’s outbreak
- But Westmead’s Professor Tony Cunningham said NSW was right to focus on contact tracing for now
In addition to tracing and isolating known contacts of COVID-19 cases, the strategy would involve vaccinating those contacts too.
Ring vaccination was used to successfully eradicate smallpox, and epidemiologist Professor Raina McIntyre said it was likely to help with COVID-19 too.
