Sherpas become first to complete winter summit of K2
A team of climbers from Nepal have become the first mountaineers to successfully complete a winter attempt on the summit of K2, the world’s second-tallest peak.
Key points:
- K2 is notoriously dangerous for its steep slopes, with almost 90 climbers having died on the mountain
- The sherpas said they sang the Nepali national anthem as they reached the summit of K2
- The Nepalese climbers’ achievement was marred by Spanish climber Sergio Mingote falling to his death
The group of Sherpas had paused at a point 70 metres short of the 8,611-metre peak to wait for each other before climbing into the world’s history books together at 4.56pm.
