Second time unlucky for Melbourne’s non-essential retailers – The Australian Financial Review
Many non-food retailers such as JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman stayed open during the first national lockdown by arguing they were essential services, but most in Melbourne will be forced to close for six weeks from midnight on Monday night.
Bunnings had argued its stores should remain open because its products were vital for tradesmen and consumers doing repairs and renovations at home during lockdown.
“Our absolute focus is on the safety of our team members and customers and we are grateful that we have a way of supporting the community and small businesses during this time and we support the government in this common-sense approach,” said Bunnings managing director Mike Schneider.
