Schitt’s Creek star addresses playing character with Indian accent – Digital Spy
Actor says he is “always open to this dialogue” about the decision.
Schitt’s Creek star Rizwan Manji has addressed the use of a fake Indian accent for his character, the dodgy salesman Ray Butani.
The Canadian actor has responded to criticism that him putting on an Indian accent for the character reinforces negative stereotypes, but he suggested that he decided to use the accent due to the backstory he created.
“It is a very slight Indian accent,” he explained to the Toronto Star. “Somebody who was probably raised in Canada, but probably was born in India or Pakistan.
