SA Commercial Marine Scalefish Fishery celebrates 185 years of sustainability and family traditions

It might be the biggest fishery in South Australia, but the Commercial Marine Scalefish Fishery still has room for smaller fishers – at least for now.

The fishery, which in 2021 is celebrating its 185th anniversary, is reflecting on what has changed over the years and what remains the same.

Marine Fishers Association executive officer Gary Morgan said the fundamentals of the fishery had remained the same all that time, with fishers still using hand-held fishing lines and nets for their catch.
