Rio strikes gold near likely new copper mine in WA – The Australian Financial Review
Rio Tinto has given the strongest indication yet that it is ready to push ahead with a new copper-gold mine in Western Australia after releasing long-awaited details of the size of the resource.
Importantly for Rio and the potential size of the mine, the deposit remains open at depth as well as to the north and southeast.
Rio has already kicked off the approvals process as it looks to build on its iron ore and diamond mining operations in WA.
The company, stung by its destruction of ancient rock shelters in WA as part of an iron ore mine expansion, said the Winu project team continues to work with local Nyangumarta and Martu traditional owners and regulators to progress the agreements…
