Research on worm brains shows how human brains can short-circuit – Brisbane Times
Scientists have found for the first time that neurons can fuse, opening an avenue of research into potential treatments for neurological conditions.
Professor Massimo Hilliard, one of the team leaders from UQs Queensland Brain Institute, said the finding was significant because it showed fused neurons could be behind some common neurological disorders.
We all carry these fusogens in us, theyre necessary to form the placenta, for example, so you can think of it as something which is normally quiet unless its needed by certain tissues, he said.
And so if it gets expressed by mistake in the nervous system, it can cause a problem.
