Research confirms ‘pale’ melanomas linked to albinism – Brisbane Times
UQ researchers have confirmed “pale” melanomas are genetically linked to albinism, giving clues about how they can be detected early and treated.

UQ researchers have been investigating these unusual melanomas, and have found they are linked genetically to albinism.
Study lead author Jenna Rayner said albinism relied on two mutated genes working together. If one of the genes is not mutated in a person they will not be an albino but might still be at risk from albino melanomas.
Thats because tumours accumulate new mutations, and because they already have a mutated albinism gene, theyre halfway to getting two mutated ones, Dr Rayner said.
